Research to guide effective English Language Development Instruction

Research to guide English language development instruction Saunders and Goldenberg.pdf

This chapter by Saunders and Goodman summarises the existing research for teaching English to speakers of other languages in an effort to identify ‘research-based’ approaches.

The chapter highlights the ‘scarcity’ of data for second language acquisition of English by school aged learners. From the available research evidence the authors produce 11 guidelines for teachers of school aged English language learners. Each guideline is explained and the author’s comment about the level of evidence that exists to support each of the 11 guidelines.

This chapter will therefore be very useful for ATESOL NT members to reflect on their current practices and align them to the conclusions that the authors have drawn based on the current evidence base.
