Effective literacy and English language instruction for ELLs

The Institute of Education Sciences (IES) have produced a range of ‘practice guides’. The aim of these practice guides is to provide educators with a summary of the research evidence and ‘actionable’ recommendations, so that teachers can implement a coherent evidenced-based teaching program.

The IES practice guides locate and gather the relevant research (with a preference for randomised trials) and then characterise their summary in the form of recommendations by labelling the level of supporting evidence for their recommendation as ‘strong’, ‘moderate’ or low.

This practice guide is the “Effective literacy and English language instruction for English learners in the elemenentery grades”.
